Greenspace debate a tough call for council

One of the first decisions the Commerce City Council will have to make this year is whether to rezone 10 lots of greenspace in Oconee Pointe Subdivision to developable R1-E lots as requested by Northeast Georgia Bank.

The bank needs the rezoning so it can sell the lots and reduce its loss on the foreclosure of the property. As greenspace, lots have zero value to the bank or a future developer.

If you want a look at the challenges facing implementation of the so-called Fair Tax, look no further than the Georgia General Assembly.

If you recall, last year there was an attempt to “reform” the state’s tax code — reduce the income tax in exchange for increasing the reach of the sales tax. And it fell flat, presumably because the legislature did not get good numbers to fully understand its effects, but actually because while folks wanted to see the income tax lowered, they were not willing to pay more in sales taxes to make it happen. My mother said to me when I was still a child, “Always leave the party while you are still having fun.” This is without a doubt the best advice ever given to me and could be applied on many levels to many circumstances.

The most obvious and superficial meaning is to leave any social gathering before the enjoyment of the occasion wanes so you can take with you good memories of what transpired. Enough said. Let’s look at the other levels or situations for which mother’s advice would apply.

Christmas is my most favorite time of the year. Not only is it a reminder of the day our Savior was born, it is also a reminder to me that the Spirit of Christmas makes me happy; it makes me more appreciative and it makes me more aware of the positive actions of others.

Since Thanksgiving I have witnessed so many instances where the Spirit of Christmas is evident in so many lives. There was the time that Joanne and Jack Legg were out helping pick up trash after the Christmas parade so that tinsel, paper and candy did not decorate University Drive. I also know that throughout the year, the Leggs have been instrumental in helping our community in so many ways. Mrs. Legg’s smiling spirit will always be remembered.

In days of old, the winter solstice was a pivotal time. It was the entrance to the long tunnel of winter: the “starvation months,” when those who had not had a good harvest or saved enough food faced serious trouble.

But it also marked the beginning of the return or rebirth of the sun: the lengthening of the days. So the ancient festivals of the sun were important as a celebration of light and life in the midst of darkness, but also as a promise of better days ahead. [Full Story »]

As I type this, there are 20 days left before Christmas — 20 days to (a) get everything done you need to get done and (b) to get into an appropriate frame of mind.

I’m not sure you can accomplish B if you accomplish A — particularly if you’re the mom of the family who must do the vast majority of the gift buying and gift-wrapping, all of the cooking, manage the logistics of who has to be where when, get the cat out of the Christmas tree and keep the household functioning to some degree.
