Attorney General Thurbert Baker has given his approval for the sale of BJC Medical Center to Tennessee-based Restoration Healthcare.

Officials expect the $7.1 million transaction to close by the end of January.

If the process for selling BJC Medical Center to Tennessee-based Restoration Healthcare goes as scheduled, Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker will hold a public hearing on the subject Nov. 16.

That’s by no means a sure thing, but the process grinds slowly forward and could be completed by the end of the year.

Negotiations between BJC Medical Center and a Tennessee company for the purchase of the medical center appear to be progressing.

Reporting at Monday’s meeting of the BJC Medical Center Authority, chairman Charles Blair said the facility hopes to have “something fairly close to a final draft” of the agreement “by the middle of the week.”

The BJC Medical Center Authority is stepping up its efforts to hire a general surgeon.

In a rare split vote, the authority elected to hire King Search & Consulting to find a replacement for Dr. Keith Ash, who left the facility almost a year ago.

The slumping economy appears to have put the brakes on negotiations by a group of doctors to acquire BJC Medical Center.
Representatives of both sides confirmed that the non-binding letter of intent between the Commerce medical facility and Doctors Hospital of Georgia was withdrawn.
