Joe Costyn’s environmental science classes at Commerce High School didn’t wait for the completion of a new high school to get into a new classroom. They built their own.

But instead of four walls, heat and air conditioning, the new classroom is located in the woods behind the school.

Gym demolished to make way for new CHS

The old Commerce High School gym was demolished this week as site work continues for the new CHS. By the end of the week, all that will be left of the gym will be a bare spot of ground as all of the debris is trucked to a C & D landfill.

CHS update: two classes to get temporary homes

Some larger Commerce High School classes will need temporary homes.

Health occupation and art classes will relocate to extra space at Commerce Elementary School during the construction of the new CHS as the existing classrooms will be demolished this summer. This option, approved by the BOE Monday, is much less costly than supplying modular units to house these classes for the two-year building period.

City school officials will find out how much the new Commerce High School will cost this Thursday.

Thirty-two sets of bids on everything from concrete work to structural steel will be opened starting at 3 p.m. in the Gainesville office of Charles Black Construction Company.

Bad economy could be good for school project

The dismal economy is a black cloud hanging over Georgia, but it could provide a nice silver lining for the Commerce Board of Education.

The board expects to advertise for bids on its new Commerce High School in late January or early February, and bad economic times could translate into more competitive — read lower — bids.
