People hoping to rid themselves of pesky squirrels under a new city ordinance should hold their fire.

The Wildlife Resources Division of the Department of Natural Resources served notice Monday that before anyone takes a shot at a marauding squirrel under the city’s “Animal Pests” ordinance they’ll need to get a state permit.

City looks to expand gas territory

Negotiations between Atlanta Gas Light and the city of Commerce over “natural gas safety plans” required by the Public Service Commission could be a boon for Commerce.

While the three plans — covering Clarke, Jackson and Banks counties — are designed to spell out specific responses in the event of a gas-related emergency, they have the potential of vastly enlarging the city’s gas service territory.

The Commerce City Council expects to approve a new schedule of electric rates Monday night. The council meets at 6:30 in the Commerce Room of the Commerce Civic Center.

Council denies Walgreens sign variance

Commerce finally put the Walgreens’ sign variance request behind it.

The city council voted Monday night to deny the pharmacy’s request for a variance in the size of its sign, but agreed to allow it to have a digital letterboard as part of the sign.
