Negotiations between Atlanta Gas Light and the city of Commerce over “natural gas safety plans” required by the Public Service Commission could be a boon for Commerce.
While the three plans — covering Clarke, Jackson and Banks counties — are designed to spell out specific responses in the event of a gas-related emergency, they have the potential of vastly enlarging the city’s gas service territory.
Commerce School leaders weighed in at length at Monday night’s school board meeting about a new report card system that scraps the traditional A-F grading scale and evaluates student achievement according to Georgia’s Performance Standards Curriculum.
Freedom Bank of Georgia based in Commerce with branches in Jefferson, Winder and Homer became the 17th bank taken over so far in 2009 by the FDIC. Freedom Bank was taken over Friday evening at 6 p.m. by state and federal banking officials. All deposits of the bank were acquired by Northeast Georgia Bank of Lavonia and all branches will reopen Monday under that bank's name.
