A Jackson County man hit while riding his bicycle on Hwy. 98 a quarter mile east of Yarbrough-Ridgeway Road was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center Tuesday night.

The end is near — the end of a long, long presidential campaign, that is.

Record numbers of voters are expected to go to the polls next week. Indeed, 20 percent of Jackson County’s voters have already cast their ballots, thanks to early and advance voting opportunities.

Officials arrested a South Carolina man Thursday afternoon about a half hour after the armed robbery of the Banks Crossing branch of Northeast Georgia Bank following a chase that began in Commerce and ended in the median of U.S. 441 a few hundred yards from the Athens-Clarke County line.

Louisiana Pacific Corp. will cease production at its Athens OSB plant, located on U.S. 441 in Center, Oct. 1, the company has announced.
The move will result in layoffs for all but 27 of its 120 employees, according to Mary Cohn, manager of corporate affairs.
