Commerce up for $100,000 federal grant

The city of Commerce received notice Monday that it stands to win a $100,000 federal grant to help it obtain land for a new park.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources board announced this week that Commerce is among 14 cities and counties recommended for $1 million in federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grants administered by the DNR.

Census estimate: growth slower in Commerce

Over the past decade, all cities in Jackson County have experienced at least double-digit population growth, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

And two of those cities — Braselton and Jefferson — have seen the number of residents in their towns grow by triple-digit numbers since 2000.

Commerce, on the other hand, had the second-lowest population growth, behind only Arcade.

There will be plenty to do and a lot to eat all day long in downtown Commerce Saturday.

The Commerce Downtown Development Authority’s (DDA) 14th annual City Lights Festival will crank up at 7 a.m. with the farmers’ market and close down after the fireworks demonstration that night.

No one injured, no major damage to building

An electrical fire contained to room 265 at BJC Nursing Home in Commerce Wednesday afternoon triggered smoke alarms and brought scores of firefighters and emergency personnel to the scene. The facility was evacuated of approximately 150 residents. [Full Story »]

Qualifying for the March 16 election to fill the Ward 5 vacancy on the city council will take place next Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 22-24, at City Hall.

At his last official Commerce City Council meeting Dec. 14, Ward 2 councilman Donald Wilson, following a 2-vote loss in the Nov. 3 city election, promised: “I’ll be back.”

Wilson has bigger plans for his comeback than Ward 2.

Attorney General OKs BJC sale

Attorney General Thurbert Baker has given his approval for the sale of BJC Medical Center to Tennessee-based Restoration Healthcare.

Officials expect the $7.1 million transaction to close by the end of January.

Johnny Eubanks to run for Ward 5 council seat

Former fire chief Johnny Eubanks has announced plans to run for the Ward 5 seat on the Commerce City Council.

The special election to fill the unexpired term of the late Richard Massey will be held Tuesday, March 16. Eubanks, 58, is the first candidate to publicly state his intentions.

A year-long analysis of three sites for a potential Jackson County reservoir failed to provide a conclusive answer, but given the economy, that’s pretty much a moot point.
