Last weekend my cousin Howie came to visit us — a rare and special treat, as he lives in Oregon and stays pretty busy there. Howie runs a national scholarship program for a large corporation, providing educational support to under-represented students (a.k.a. minorities), a category which, he notes, is expected to include caucasians like him within the next 10 years. “Fine by me,” he adds happily. “I think it’s great. It’s what America is all about. Mix it up!”

I write this column late — laboring early on Labor Day — as Hurricane Gustav approaches the Louisiana coast. By the time you read this, Gustav will be a tropical storm and we’ll know whether it was just another hurricane or whether it was on the scale of Katrina.

City grateful for aid in its time of need

The tornado that dipped out of the heavy clouds last Tuesday afternoon sent a shock wave through Commerce and in the few seconds it was on the ground it destroyed a couple of structures, damaged scores more and toppled countless trees. But, as almost everyone around the area hit observed, “it could have been a lot worse.”

Closure of detention center will be felt

When the I.W. Davis Probation Detention Center opened in Jackson County, it was considered a tremendous asset. The facility provided jobs in an industry not affected by recession and offered a low-cost labor force for local governments.

I have friends — and I don’t just mean guy friends — who are fanatic about football. I know not to call them Saturday or Sunday afternoons during the football season. If I do, and if they even hear the phone and answer it, I’ll hear the roar of the fans in the background, like a heavy surf, and the announcer’s voice in the foreground, and our conversation will be punctuated with interruptions while the friend I have called turns away from the phone and talks, via TV screen, to the men on the football field, telling them what to do.

As I tiptoe toward my 65th birthday, I’m getting an awful lot of mail about the vital decisions I’ll have to make, sooner or later — some of them sooner — regarding Medicare. “There are so many choices!” the brochures exclaim. “How will you compare plans?” And, more ominously, “What should you be doing now?” Do I know? Honestly, it’s almost enough to interfere with my sleep.
